Its beginning to look a lot like... Spring! Its now hopefully getting a bit warmer, although don't get caught out as its not uncommon to still have snow and frosts at this time of the year. There are now a wider variety of seeds that you can sow, as well as topping up your pots, baskets and borders with some bright cheerful spring bedding plants like primroses and pansies.

March is also the time of year that we start to get in our first batches of cottage garden plants, ready for your deliveries. We only work with tried and trusted plant nurseries that grow your plants in all weathers, so they are perfectly fine to plant now (provided we are not under snow!)

Top jobs

  • Sow hardy annuals, herbs and vegetables like carrots and radishes.

  • Towards the end of the month, you can start mowing the lawn. Don't forget to mow slightly higher than normal on the first cut, and then take it back more on the next cut.

  • Plant summer-flowering bulbs like Dahlias, Gladioli and Freesias. You can dot some gladioli through your cottage garden border for a bigger display of summer colour, as they don't take up too much space.

  • Feed trees, shrubs and hedges with a slow-release fertiliser.

March is an exciting time in the UK garden, as early spring blooms begin to make their mark. Here are some lovely flowering plants you might spot in March:

  • Daffodils: These cheerful yellow blooms are a quintessential sign of spring.

  • Crocuses: Their vivid purple, yellow, and white flowers often pop up in lawns and borders.

  • Forsythia: This shrub is known for its bright yellow flowers on bare stems.

  • Magnolias: Many varieties of this striking tree or shrub flower in early spring.

  • Pulmonaria (Lungwort): Features pretty blue, pink, or white flowers and mottled leaves.

  • Hyacinths: With their strong fragrance and bold colours, these bulbs bring beauty to borders and containers.

  • Early Tulips: Certain varieties begin to bloom in late March, adding a splash of elegance.
